Professor Stan Du Plessis

Stan du Plessis is a macroeconomist at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa where he is a Professor in the Department of Economics. He is currently the youngest full professor at Stellenbosch and the youngest professor of Economics at Stellenbosch for more than fifty years. He is also the vice-president of the Economic Society of South Africa and treasurer and secretary of the African Econometric Society. Stan is a graduate of the University of Stellenbosch (PhD) and the University of Cambridge (M.Phil). He teaches macroeconomics, monetary economics and advanced econometrics, mainly to graduate students.

His publications in academic journals include papers on monetary policy, business cycles, economic growth, the exchange rate, institutional economics and law and economics. He is also a regular author on economic topics for the financial press in South Africa. Prior to his academic career he spent three years as an economist for Old Mutual International Asset Management (UK) Ltd in London. Those were volatile years on the financial markets and he played an important role in eliminating the exposure of his company’s portfolios to Russian and Brazilian assets prior to the crises of 1998 and early 1999.
